Discuss fully how much politics had to play in the running of the Custom-House?

  1. Politics plays a major role in the running of the "The Custom House". Many of the workers there were granted to their positions through government interfering. Hawthorne himself had a politically appointed job as the position of chief executive officer of the Custom House through the president's commission, then lost the job when a switch of power was made. The custom house was under all government power.

  2. In the "Custom House" everything that happen surrounded politics. The Custom House itself was under the leadership of the government. Everyone that worked there, including Hawthorne were appointed their position by the government. Hawthorne talks about the political elections surrounding the Custome House and also the liberal actions that took place.

  3. In the "Custom House" politics had a major role this is because the government had a big role in everything during that time and you have to remember that the custom house workers are hired by the government and different people in politics and the whole custom house is made and ran by government officials.

  4. In the "Custom House" the politics indeed played a big role because the colleagues or custom house workers, and Hawthorne himself as well as everyone else are hired by the government officials. And that is what everything is based on. Hawthorne later talks about politics and the elections " Had it been otherwise,- had an active politician been put into this influential post..."

  5. Politics played a huge role in the running of the Custom-House. Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona stated that he and his colleagues were hired by the government. He also says that the only reason his colleagues were still Custom-House employees was because of the government and their family connections.

  6. Politics played a strong role in The Custom House. Various members and workers of The Custom House received their jobs because of government officials. Hawthorne also speaks of political elections and previous liberal actions. The Custom House was basically run by the government.

  7. The Customs House was run largely by politics. A man could be appointed to work at the Customs House and hold his position until his death. Nathaniel Hawthorne's colleagues still held their jobs at the Customs House because of the connections that they had developed within the government. Nathaniel Hawthorne was being removed from his position because there was a change in power. There was little work being done. A ship full of smuggled goods could pass through and the men in the Customs House wouldn't do as much as to budge. Most of the Customs House employees put forth little effort and collected a paycheck from Uncle Sam.

  8. Politics was an important aspect of the Custom-House system because one could guarantee permanent employment with the right political relationship. If a man was not as fortunate, he would be thrust out into the world with nothing. The extent of the government's influence is shown through the delusion that Uncle Sam would bring salvation even after kicking one through the doors of the Custom-House. Hawthorne's perception is that one who worked there too long would develop an extreme dependency on the government and would lose any ability or potential they once had. Therefore, if one was rid of their job, they would be lost.

  9. Basically all of the Custom-House official were connected in one way or another with someone in the government. The goverment appointed and hired those who were already in office. Another way politics were intertwined with the Custom House were the political roles the officials partook of.

Hawthorne states in the Custom House " the greater part of my officers were Whigs....and it was well for them that the New Surveyor was not a politician..." Paraphrasing those lines Hawethorne is saying positions could be altered or upheaved depending upon which party the higher ranking of office was in. Had the Surveyor been a strong active Democrat linked to political services all of the remaining Whigs would be in much trouble.

  11. Politics has a place in everything, no matter how unfortuante. A political role found its way to The Custom House also. If you were in relations with the "right" politcal party, you were guaranteed a permanent position. You could even say that the Custom House was ran by the goverment. This is evident in the General's role, when Hawthorne said " he might truly be termed a legitimate son of revenue system, dyed in the wool, or rather born in the purple". The men working with Nathaniel Hawthorne did not do as much as lift a finger, but still got a check from Uncle Sam by their pay period.

  14. Politics plays a major role in the running of Custom-house. The officials who work at the Custom-House were appointed by the government due to their connection. Securing a position was largely determined which the political party one is associate with. For instance, the party that the majority of the government is from will have the most official in the Custom-House.

  15. Politics held complete control over the the Custom House. The government is what chose the people that were allowed to work in the custom house and who werent. If you were in good company with the right party you had a seat waiting for you at the costum house, and that seat will remain yours until death, because of who you know.

  16. In the "Custom House" politics had an huge impact on the story. Many of the workers at the Custom House were hired and given the job that they held by the government. There are political elections that are also mentioned. The reason Hawthorne was losing his job was;the power within the governtment was changing.

  17. In the story "The Custom House", politics played and importent role. To start off, the government had full control of the Custom House, if it were notfor the government, there would be no Custom House. Also Everyone in there, Hawthorne included, has gotten their positions through connections with government officials. Hawthorne believed that some people became so dependent of the governemtn for giving them this job, that if there were to be fired, they would become nothing. If a man was fortunate the government could assure a lifetime job in the Custom House.

  18. In "The Custom House", politics play a huge role because the entire custom house is ran around politics. The workers in the custom house got their jobs through political connections and could stay for as long as they lived. Also without political force the custom house would not have been around in the first place.

  20. Politics played a significant role in "The Custom House". The main aspect of how everything was run there was based solely on politics. At the Custom House a man could be given a job and he could hold that title until the day of his death, no promotions, no demotions, no replacements. If someone got kicked out of their position they would be lost due to their dependency on the job and money. Unfortunately, like some aspects of the government, the men of the Custom House did very little work (although their job entailed much more of them) and still expected and received their checks.

  21. Politics contributed a great deal to the running of the Custom House. In specific context, the political party determined whether you were able to work at the Custom House or not. This leads one to the thought that the Custom House is lead by the government.

  22. Despite the fact that the custom-house was put in place by the government, and the government assigned the jobs one does not think politics had much to do with the custom-house. One feels that the custom-house was there for workers to get emolument: more like a retirement than a work environment, and not taken seriously among the government, or the workers. (The workers were so slack they let others come in and steal merchandise right from under their noses). With a good name, or connections in society anyone could work at the custom-house. One feels that if the political workers were involved more in the Custom-House it would have been ran under better rule.

  23. Without politics and the government there would possibly be no Custom-House. One could be appointed a job by the government in the Custom-House till death. The expanse of the government's power expressed through Uncle Sam would deliver redemption even after one was forced into the Custom-House. The people who worked in the Custom-House needed to be familiar with traditional and established politics. Without a background in politics one was jobless.

  24. In the running of the Custom House, politics played a pretty major role. With the right connections to the government, in other words being part of the right political party one would be secured in a position at the Custom House. This shows that the government was responsible for who were chosen to work at the Custom House. A good example of the government playing an important role is when Hawthorne is fired due to a shift in power.

  25. Politics played an important running in the Custom-House. In order to get a job there, one had to get approval from the government. Clearly, the Custum-House was controlled by the government. There was also political elections involved around the Custom-House. There was no doubt about the control of the government's presence there.

  27. Politics is a significant characteristic as in mention throughout The Custom House. The author says that many of the employees were granted their position through default. One example of such a governmental commission is that for Nathaniel Hawthorne even, in commission as chief executive officer by presidential request for a number of years of stay. This interference of the government is a clear indication that political appointment into various positions in the custom house is of the responsibility of the government.

During this time, most jobs were granted due to the acceptance given by the government. The Custom House was also controlled under the goverment during this time.

In Ashley Velez’s blog about understanding other cultures, she states, “He also says that the only reason his colleagues were still Custom-House employees was because of the government and their family connections.” This proves true when one considers how the government gave H Hawthorne and his fellow colleagues their jobs from the beginning. Not only that, but during that time period the government had the authority to appoint every person their position or work in the Custom-House.

It can even be said that if one had the right political connections one could ensure a permanent job.
