  2. Mr. Surveyor Johnathan Pue is an essential character in "The Custom House" because he represents Nathaniel Hawthorne's second persona. He is the personality that had all the major aspects of the story in his possession. These details include the red cloth with the scarlet letter"A" and the sheets that document Hester Prynne's life and statements. Therefore, the components assist in the plot development of The Scarlet Letter. If not for Johnathan Pue, Nathaniel Hawthorne would not be able to write the novel with the same distinction.

  6. Jonathan Pue plays an important role in the "Custom House". When the narrator of "The Custom House" finds the cloth with the embroided letter A and the manuscript, he discovers that they belong to Jonathan Pue, who was a custom surveyor about a hundred years ago. Jonathan is a fictional character that Nathaniel Hawthorne created to represent himself in the story. He connects us to the Scarlett letter because according to the story, he was going to originally write the story of Hester Prynne. Therefore if it were not for Pue, Hawthorne would not have written the Scarlet Letter.

  7. Mr. Jonathan surveyor Pue is a very essential character in the Custom-House. Mr. Surveyor Pue is not only the link to the founding of the Scarlet Letter but he is Hawethorne's second persona. The documents, original papers, and the scarlet letter itself are of Surveyor Pue's property until Hawethorne discovered it in the second story room of the Custom-House. The findings of Surveyor Pue's documents links to how crucial of a character he is, based on the writings of the Scarlet Letter. Had Surveyor Pue not have had these documents and the scarlet letter itself, Hawethorne's altered version of the Scarlet Letter would not be written.

  8. Nathaniel Hawthorne wanted for a long time to be able to write, but felt uneasy about making a career out of his writing. One day he finds a manuscript with a scarlet letter "A" bundled to it. This manuscript was written by none other than Johnathan Pue, who was the surveyor of the Custom House a hundred years before Hawthorne's time. Not only was Hawthorne not able to write anything on his own, he also lacked inspiration working with his zealess colleagues. This makes Johnathan Pue the most important character in the Custom House beacuse if it wasnt for the combination of Pue's manuscript that was abandoned in the second story of the custom house, and Hawthornes impeding boredom, he would not have had the passion to write the scarlet letter. Hawthorne creates a persona that tells the story, making one assume that he was actually there, connecting the reader to the Scarlet Letter.

  9. Jonathen Pue is such a critical character in the "Custom House", because he paves the road for the reader to see each character that appears in the Scarlet Letter. He prepares the reader to understand and be able to comprehend what is going on during those times. With those letters Sir Pue left behind, it encouraged Hawthrone to write the Scarlet Letter and share to the reader -and the world- what is going on. Without Sir Jonathen Pue there would be no letters, without any letters there would be no Scarlet Letter.

  10. Jonathen pue is an important character in the"Custom House" because of the letters found on the second story of the house. The letters are that of the Scarlet Letter which Pue authors.
Also with the letters is left an "A" which is the man symbolism in the The Scarlet Letter. Pue leads the reader right into the story of the Scarlet Letter. Pue basicly gives the background and connection of the "Custom House" to the Scarlet Letter.
