The letters; found by Hawthorn’s persona; are said to be of an event that has happened two centuries ago, and are private letters written with his own hand (20). This information of first hand recollection brings an appeal to ethos. Thus, creating even more interest into the story, despite the fact Hawthorn admits to adding his own spice. The vivid description of Jonathan Pue’s letters found with a large Scarlet "A", and beautiful transition; from a bored Surveyor to a mused writer; leads us into the story of THE SCARLET LETTER.
ReplyDeleteMr.Surveyor Pue is one of the most important characters in" The Custom House" because he is the representation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's second persona. Mr. Pue is the owner of all of the statements that are found by Mr. Hawthorne on the second floor of the Custom House. By finding these letters that were left behind, this gave him a good foundation to begin THE SCARLET LETTER. If it were not for Mr. Pue, Nathaniel Hawthorne would never have been prusuaded to to have written THE SCARLET LETTER

Surveyor Pue is the original keeper of the statements found by Hawthorne during his time at the Custom House. These letters which provided a plot to which the SCARLET LETTER is based along with the some added dramatization on Nathaniel Hawthorne part the Scarlet is a clear documentation of his findings of Surveyor Pue's papers.
