  1. The Surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona that marks his time working at the Custom-House. The Surveyor of Revenue monitored all the goods that were in the Custom-House. Nathaniel Hawthorne views him as a man of great of intelligence that is not recognized by his peers. Hawthorne reasons that his fellow co-workers had not read any of his writing and were not familiar with the literary genius present there. Therfore, they viwed him as an ordinary man, an understatement of Hawthorne's opinion of himself.

  2. Ironically, the Surveyor of Revenue was Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. His job was to check all packages that went through The Custom House and state that they had been checked by him. He believes that the surveyor was an honorable, great man but yet no one realized.Because his colleagues did not know of his great literary talents, they thought of him as a regular man as themselves.

  3. The Surveyor of Revenue was "well for their venerable brotherhood that the new Surveyor was not a politician, and though a faithful Democrat in principle, neither received nor held his office with any reference to political services. Had it been otherwise--had an active politician been put into this influential post, to assume the easy task of making head against a Whig Collector, whose infirmities withheld him from the personal administration of his office--hardly a man of the old corps would have drawn the breath of official life within a month after the exterminating angel had come up the Custom-House steps." Basically he thought good of the Surveyor.

  4. It was pretty clear while reading the Custom House the effects working there had on Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne thought the surveyor to be a respectable talented man, whom he appreciated. In actuality, the Surveyor was Hawthorne's persona. He checked packages and goods that went throught the Custom House. Hawthorne made this persona because of the lack of respect he recieved from his colleagues, whom saw him as the same as the next man. He is most certaintly sure that if they read one of his literary masterpeices, they would not see him in the same light.

  5. The Surveyor of Revenue was Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. His job in the Custom House was to check the packages. Each package had to be checked and stated that he had checked them himself. Hawthornes persona states that the Surveyor was a man of honor. He states that he was a great man but his co-workers didnt realize that. His co-workers jus thought of him as just another ordinary worker in the Custom House. In the men heads Hawthorne didnt hold that title.

  6. The Surveyor of Revenue is basically Nathaniel Hawthorne himself and his job is to check and monitor all packages that enter the Custom House.
Hawthorne sees the Surveyor as "a faithful democrat in principle neither nor held his office with any reference to political services."
Basically saying the Surveyor is not a strict and deeply active politician. Hawthorne views the Surveyor in good light when it came to his literature although all of his officers did not see the same. Directly in the Custom-House Hawthorne states "viewed me in no other light, and probably knew me in no other character. None of them, I presume, had ever read a page of my inditing, or would have cared a fig the more for me,.... Basically Hawthorne knows as the Surveyor his fellow-officers don't seem that intune with how great his writings of literature are.

  7. Nathaniel Hawthorne persona, holds the title Surveyor of Revenue.
The job of Surveyor of revenue was to monitor all the items which were imported into the Custom House. Hawthorne sees himself as superior to all his fellow co-workers. He speaks of how they lack to read any of his masterpiece's that he wrote, making them unaware of his ingenuity. Which makes them view him as one of them, and just as simplistic as they are. Which -according to himself- is a major understatement, since he feels they are all idiots.

  9. The Surveyor of Revenue, who monitors and checks packages, is Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona. He holds himself in high regard and is very narcissistic. He feels as though he was the perfect surveyor and was worthy of respect. Hawthorne believes that he is unappreciated. Because his colleagues had not read his literary work, they did not realize the genius that stood before them and therefore treated him as if he was a ordinary person.

  10. In "The Custom House", the surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona. In the story his job is to monitor all packages that went through the Custom House. Hawthorne's opinion of him, therefore his opinion of himself, is that he is perfect in his job. He says that he is a "man of thought, fancy, and sensibility" (Hawthorne page 17).He also believes that his coworkers do no appreciate him or his talent for writing. None of them cared for what he wrote and probably would not care even if they did read it.

  12. The Surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona and his job was to supervise the packages that came into the custom house. Hawthorne feels that he is doing a great job, and that his colleagues are ungrateful for his presence because they never took the time to read his work. He feels that if they read his writing that they would see him differently.

  13. The surveyor of revenue is Hawthorne's persona. He was in charge of overseeing to the packages. Hawthorne believes this man to be above his peers in intelligence and superior traits. The surveyor is "the big fish in the small pond," he is wasting his talent away by working at the Custom-House. No one recognizes his genius, and he is unappreciated by his peers. The surveyor also thinks highly of himself, so as to think that working at the Custom-House has lowered his intelligence.

  14. Nathaniel Hawthorne himself, or if one may say his persona, holds the position of the actual surveyor of revenue. He was the officer on duty to oversee the packages coming in and out in the "Custom House". Hawthorne's persona feels as if he is too self-important to be working in such a place as the custom house and that his intelligence in unappreciated by his fellow co-workers.

  15. The Surveyor of revenue A.k.A Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona holds the duty of overseeing all packages coming in and going out of the Custom-House. The Surveyor thinks quite highly of himself. He is regarded as egotistically and intelligent which is poorly wasted at the Old Manse. He does not seem to care fondly about his job in fact he states that this job strips one of their ability to stand and support their own weight. Due to his position Hawthorne's persona reveals the whole reason behind why the Scarlet letter was written.

  16. The Surveyor of Revenue is actually Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona. The job of the Surveyor is to monitor the packages that arrive and depart from the Custom House. Hawthorne's persona feels that his peers do not understand or appreciate his writings or him as a person. As the Surveyor, Hawthorne feels like he is above the others he works with, due to the fact that they fail to comprehend his intelligence. On the other hand, those who Hawthorne worked with thought of him as a regular person since they did not take notice of his many talents.

  17. In "The Custom House", the Surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona. His job was simply to monitor the shipments that flowed through the the Custom House. He believed that he was the only one that could do his job correctly and that every expectation that was had of him was fulfilled. Although he believes this of himself, he thinks that no one else holds him in such high regards. Hawthorne felt as though he was viewed as a simple and ordinary man and that everyone was blind to the literary genius that he truthfully was.

  18. The Surveyor of Revenue was in actuality, Nathaniel Hawthorn's persona that spent his working years in the custom house. The Surveyor of Revenue's job was to monitor and record all the goods passing through the custom house. Additionally, Nathaniel Hawthorne's attitude towards the Surveyor of Revenue is of a man of great superiority. Hawthorne views him as a man with high intelligence. Therefore Hawthorne's views on Surveyor of Revenue is ordinary.

  19. In Hawthorne’s “The Custom House” the Surveyor of Revenue was Nathaniel Hawthorne's persona of himself. As surveyor his job was to monitor all the packages that were brought into the Custom-House. He brings about this persona after noting his co-workers at the Custom-House. Even with a job at the Custom-House he held himself at high standards. Describing himself as, "a man of thought, fancy, and sensibility" (17). Even with such adornment he still finds himself unappreciated, and mentioned how his co-workers did not see him as the true literary genius that he was. Working at a custom-house does not make one laudable, and with such a job how does someone write a marvelous meaningful masterpiece. It is with this character (Surveyor of Revenue) that he leads us into the 2nd floor of the Custom-House.

  20. The Surveyor of Revenue is actually Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. The Surveyor of Revenue holds the duty of overseeing all packages coming in and going out of the Custom-House. Mr. Hawthorne thinks very highly of himself ,and believes that he is over qualified for the job that he is holding. He also believes that his co- workers do not apppreciate his wonderful way of thinking because they don't want to read his writing.

  21. Nathaniel Hawthorne is the Surveyor of the Revenue. The Surveyor's job consisted of many affairs one being inspecting and overseeing all the goods and packages the arrived at the Custom-House. Hawthorne believed to have met all the expectations required of a Surveyor. Others viewed him as an average, ordinary man and Hawthorne thought otherwise about himself. The other workers fooled around, while Hawthorne felt as though he was truthfully better at what he did then his fellow-officers, merchants, and sea-captains.

The other employees viewed him as an ordinary man. They didn't read his books or recognize his intelligence. Hawthorne, on the other hand, felt that the Surveyor was "a man of thought, fancy, and sensibility". Clearly, he thought highly of himself.

  23. Evidently, the Surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. The Surveyor of Revenue monitored all the goods and packages that were held inside of the Custom-House. Hawthorne’s attitude towards himself was that he is “A man of thought, fancy, and sensibility, (had he ten times the Surveyor’s proportion of those qualities,) may, at any time, be a man of affairs”(30). Although, the other workers did not see him the same way he did. They found the Surveyor of Revenue as a different character, and they could care less for his writings and “inditing”.

  28. The Surveyor of Revenue is Nathaniel Hawthorne's primary persona. This character is responsible for monitoring importations as well as exportations of any unapproved material and determined whether permissible or not dependent on custom house policy restrictions. Additionally, the Surveyor of Revenue thought of himself as the higher most intellectual, according to his prided literary publications, above otherwise underdeveloped coworkers, and therefor felt more so deserved although lesser most appreciated.

He believes that the surveyor was an honorable, great man but yet no one realized”. This proves true when one considers the fact that as the Surveyor of Revenue, Hawthorne checked any and everything, therefore, instead of on title pages for books, Hawthorne's name “…had another type of vogue. The Custom House marker imprinted it, with a stencil and black paint, on pepper bags...and bales of all kinds of dutiable merchandise” (pg 18), concluding that his name, “on such queer vehicle of fame, a knowledge of my existence…was carried where it has never been before” (18), meaning everyone knew him as the Surveyor, instead of an author.

In Kayla Johnson's blog about the Surveyor of Revenue and Nathaniel Hawthorne's attitude towards him, she states, "Nathaniel Hawthorne views him as a man of great intelligence that is not recognized by his peers". This proves true when Hawthorne begins to tell the traits of the Surveyor. Due to the fact that Hawthorne himself is the Surveyor of Revenue, he shows himself higher on the social scale than his fellow colleagues. With the job of managing all packages that come in and out of the Custom House, Hawthorne views himself as "a man of thought, fancy, and sensibility...". (Page 17)
